Q.      What is the role of microorganisms in our lives?

Ans:   Microorganism plays very important role in our lives some microorganisms are useful and some are harmful.

Q.      What is difference between virus and bacteria?

Virus

Bacteria

They are very small

They are large in size as compared to verses.

They are non – cellular organisms

They are single – called organisms

They do not grow and do not divide

They grow in size and divide to produce more bacteria

All produce diseases in man, animals or plants

Some are harmless, some useful and some disease – causing.

I Wonder Page# 28

Remember and understand (Page# 29)

Q.      How do germs make us ill?

Ans:   When people cough and sneeze, germs from their bodies are pushed out into the air when you breathe in the same air, germs enter your body and makes you ill.

Q.      What is an infections?

Ans:   When harmful micro organisms get into your body they reproduce rapidly. As their numbers increase, more cells are damaged and more toxins produced and you soon begin to feel ill. This is called are infection.

iv.      Cover the bowl and leave it for a day at a normal room temperature.

v.       Taste it after a day.

vi.      The milk turns into yoghurt.

Unit# 1 Classification and Living Thing

v  I Wonder (Page# 2)

1.  Why do biologists classify living things?

Ans:   Biologists classify living things to make it easier to study, analyze and research them.

v  Remember And Understand (Pg#4)

1.       What are the main classifications of the animal kingdom?

Ans:   There are two main classes of the animal kingdom:

1.   Vertebrates

2.   Invertebrates

2.       List the main differences between Vertebrates and Invertebrates?

Vertebrates

Invertebrates

Animals with backbones are called vertebrates.

They are divided into five groups.

Fishes, reptiles, mammals, birds and amphibians.

Animals without a backbone are called invertebrates.

They are divided into two groups.

Insects and worms

v  Remember And Understand (Pg#4)

1.   What is the function of segments on the body of a worm?

Ans:    Segments help the worms in movement.

2.       What is the function of a shell?

Ans:    It protects the body of insects.

v  Remember And Understand (Pg#6)

           What is Spawn?

Ans:   These are two main groups of animals:

1.           Vertebrates

2.           Invertebrates

Vertebrates: Vertebrates are the animals with backbones e.g. birds, mammals.

Invertebrates: Invertebrates are the animals without backbones e.g. insects, worms

Q.2    What are main features of vertebrates and invertebrates?

Vertebrates

Invertebrates

Animals with backbones are called vertebrates.

It has an internal skeleton.

Vertebrates have compound eyes.

Animals without a backbone are called invertebrates.

It has not an internal skeleton.

Invertebrates do not have compound eyes.

Q.3    List down the difference between monocotyledons and dicotyledons with the help of diagram?

Monocotyledons

Dicotyledons

Monocot plants contain one seed leaf.

It does not bear flowers.

For example: wheat, maize , rice etc.

Higher Order Thinking Questions (HOT`s)

1.       How would you classify Human Beings?

Ans:   Human beings are placed in the class of mammals because:

1.   They have hair on body.

2.   They breathe through their lungs.

3.   Female mammals give birth to their babies and feed them on milk.

2.       Discuss your understanding of why the classification of living things is important?

Ans:   Classification of living things is important because:

1.   It is easy to study them.

2.   It is easy to determine the similarities and differences between them.

Q.3    What would be the impact of loss of biodiversity in a river?

Ans:   Biodiversity improves water quality and helps ecosystems to withstand pressures from pollution. Without it animals and plants cannot survive in the rivers for a long time because some animals make their food through plants in the river water.
