Sports and Games

“Sports do not build the character, they reveal it.”

A sport consists of an everyday activity carried out with a purpose and in an environment different from every day: for competition, enjoyment, to attain excellence and for the development of the skill.

“Sports and games are the food of body as knowledge is the food of mind.”

Sports and games are an essential part of schools and colleges all over the world and so is in Pakistan. Students take an active part in all kinds of sports. In this way, they keep themselves healthy and fit. Games provide them means of physical exercise. Some special games like hockey, football, badminton, cricket, net ball and swimming are not only different events of athletics and make body sound and healthy but also provide a source of entertainment.

Those who take part in sports and games feel joy and pleasure. They create cheerfulness in visitors. The people gather in thousands to see a match. They praise the players and clap. It increases love and brotherhood , feeling of comradeship and cooperation. Then we also learn the useful lesson of accepting defeat bravely.

“The team that lacks team spirit has less chances of victory”

Sports and games also bring discipline in our life which is very important to lead a good life. Straight and upward character is a natural result of sportsmanship. A sportsman believes in fair play and hates foul play . So, the games teach us the spirit of patience, courage , honesty and dignity. They also create a sharp sense of judgment, timely decision and bold action. All these virtues which are learned on the playing field maintain valuable assets throughout life.

Another advantage of sports and games is that the people responsible for leisure activities often seek recognition and fame.

To conclude, sports activity is probably as old as the mankind itself because it is related to learning, competition and entertainment. All of these are valued aspects of modern life by most of people , and this perhaps explains why sports and games are such an enduring part of our culture. It is therefore very necessary that our government should try its best to popularize games in our country. The students should be taught at grass root level to play games regularly and to improve their skills. Only in this way we can train good players and good citizens.

It is not hard to be good from time to time in sports, what’s tough is being good every day.
